A Tribute to the Grand Old People!

A long, uncertain vacation is finally coming to a close... I feel completely nonchalant about it. There's this inherent sense of restlessness but I knew it was coming and I'm ready to start the next phase of my life. The vacation was not very dull but not very exciting either. It was a mixture of boredom and excitement and so, on the whole it was totally balanced.
The vacation was an overdose of sorts.. Because I never had a schedule and I was exposed to a lot of domestic affairs or if you can put it a bit more straight, to the realities of daily life. Life has become a mechanical sequence of events. Almost everyone wakes up, gets ready and makes haste to reach their workplace and when they get back home, the day's over.

I really envy the way of life, that my grandparents had. They never got to see the "big bills" all the time, or they didn't feel the need to keep achieving something all the time. But they lived a peaceful life. People mattered more in their times as compared to the importance given to money these days. People lived in harmony with each other, families shared their joys and sorrows and they all found happiness in being united. They never had to think of crooked ways to achieve ends and everyone had the strong will to face difficulties, however big. They took interest in the welfare of their families as a whole. They weren't much educated but humanity abounded in their hearts. There was a sense of togetherness, simplicity and straight-forwardness.
My grandmother has a huge train of 25 first cousins in her maternal side. Its difficult to even remember their names all at once. But they still care for each other, even when all of them are apart. Its really amusing when they all gather together and refer to me as the great-grand daughter of their so and so aunt!! And trying to find your exact position in the family tree is almost a puzzle. The first time you are told what's the blood relation with someone you are meeting up, you can be more than sure that your head will spin as if you just came out from a high thrill ride in a theme park.
When such a rapport is shared between people, you find the atmosphere overwhelming. They all come together to lend a shoulder, whether its a wedding or a funeral. They deem their presence more important than their travelling expenses, or their chores. To be there for each other through thick and thin, is something our grandparents exemplify all the time.I'm sure each one of you can observe this when you talk to your grandparents..
And the knowledge they possess is unparalleled. My grandmother never went to a school. But she's an expert in embroidery and can tell you tables in mathematics that are mind blowing. For eg: she can tell you the multiples of 1/4 or 3/4. And my grandfather knows almost entire Tamil Nadu by heart. Go to a place, and he'll be able to tell you the exact distance of the nearest city in miles, the short cuts from one city to another. Because he had been to all these places by foot. I won't be surprised if he would tell a differently looking tree for a landmark and luckily for him, things haven't changed much in the southern districts in the last few decades!!
I often get to hear the story of my great grandmother who brought up her children as well as her grandchildren saving every penny she had. She never went to school nor was financially resourceful but she instilled such good thoughts and mental strength in her grandchildren, that they have all come up well, facing all odds. My parents' generation still bring out that mental strength which was once sowed by their grandparents. I don't think we've ever learnt all that. Grandparents may not bequeath their property to us but they pass on all those qualities that you need, to live your life well.

People! Never  ever underestimate your grandparents. They may have archaic ideology but they always hold goodwill in their hearts. They are old-fashioned because they are not accustomed to the kind of dynamics that we see everyday. They are people who want to be original and who want to stick to the huge line of traditions that have been coming up since centuries. But they always worry about your welfare , your safety and your life. Never forsake them. They can be such a source of strength when you need all of it. Make them talk about their olden days and you can then get a gist of their wide experience and wisdom. A kind word now and then and Care is all they need; make sure that as grandchildren, you don't deprive them of that joy!!

This is not being preachy but just an attempt to bring in an insight about what we're missing in the name of being trendy or " abreast with the changing times".

And to give a fitting end to this tribute, Salutations to the grand old people of our times!

On board flight 9W-343: A myriad of emotions

The travel back from Baroda to Chennai, this May, was probably something I'd never forget in my life time... Nothing spectacular, frightening or adventurous happened.. Yet, there was something about the flying experience that made me think, and a lot...
First thing that caught my eye was the sophistication of the entire boarding process... I found it amusing..  If the aircraft is farther away, I can still understand the security issues that would come up.. Why do you need a dozen buses to drive you to the aircraft, when u are barely ten steps away from it? And that too, the bus driver makes dozens of turns, before he gets you to the aircraft... Why such a complex procedure for something as simple as, walking directly up to the aircraft, neatly in a line??? May be am missing something, but i honestly felt that walking was much better than zooming around in buses that have no seats when the terminal gate is 30 feet from the aircraft..
And entering the aircraft was a joy in itself... And I noticed something that didn't exactly make me astonished, but definitely made me reflect.. Without loading, the weight of the aircraft was approx. 40,000 kg.. And when fully loaded, its approx. 70,000 kg... beats me, to make such a huge mass fly requires hell lot of  potential energy, acceleration and most importantly, FUEL... I could just imagine the amount of White Petroleum that goes into each flight.. No wonder, we'd run dry of all our petroleum reserves in a short while.!!!
As soon as we settled in the seats, I was all ready to surf the Jet Screen, behind each seat, to check the movie I might want to see, there was so much in it to completely entertain me for more than 30 hours.. But, I somehow changed my mind and decided to look out through the window while I listened to Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's Mohan Veena.... The speed at which we took off, the sight of all Mumbai looking so tiny and the huge waves in the Arabian Sea made me wonder how beautiful Nature is..
The fight that goes on for land, water, geographical boundaries, and the divide between people, religions, castes and creed, seemed so silly when I saw the huge landscape, the path of the rivers glistening under the sun, the huge hills full of trees, the innumerable houses that looked like miniature toys, and the calm sea with its innumerable number of waves...
And flying above the skies, I could get an idea of what heaven is... When you look down from the sky, everything looks beautiful, hatred vanishes and you can feel the depth of the cosmos and the entire universe in your eyes and your mind... And you can't help but think great of the Creator who made all this....

The world is so huge, we are a part of something greater... When you see from above the part you play in the larger scheme of things, you will forget all differences..The hatred you feel for your competitor, or the indifference you feel for the beggar or the happiness you feel for yourself..Everything will vanish.. You'll feel one with the world.. There'd not be "I", you'd think about "All of us"... You'd find Godliness descending upon yourself!!

The Woes of Worrying

Worry... The name gives a sense of deja vu to everyone...Because, none has been spared by Worries or worrying.... Right from the moment it dawns, and till the moment one gets into deep slumber, one's mind overflows with worries... But the irony is, people these days, worry the most for something that least requires it...

For instance, there's this acquaintance of mine who was more worried about the fact that he didn't have food enough to fill his entire belly rather than worrying about the fact he had to brush up through many lessons when an exam was just two hours away... Or worse still, there's this girl who's much worried about the fact that her "luck" is lost when her supposedly lucky fountain pen along with all the other contents of her stationery collection is missing minutes before her exam.... The latest movie thats supposed to be a "super-duper" hit also echoes this sentiment.. the heroine apparently attempts suicide because her pet, a pug, was lost and not to mention another super grosser, in which the central character organizes a mourning ceremony when her pet cat died...
The mothers aren't spared too.... If   I take half an hour longer to get home than the stipulated time... All hell breaks down loose... I can't exactly blame my mom.. but still, its not a pleasant sight to see her worried face...
And the kids these days are the most "worried" of the lot...They are not exactly welcome to the idea if the next door kid gets to go 2 rounds extra on the common cycle.. Or if someone nearby is eating an ice cream... Or if their grandmothers, living in a different part of the country visit a place that they liked when they had been with their grandmoms last vacation...
And the list goes on...
I don't think that worrying is itself wrong... All I mean to say is, give importance to worrying only when its necessary... Our mind assumes and visualizes things always.. It spins.. All the time.. If you can follow your thought process, you may understand, about the unnecessary things that you pay extra attention to... You wont even have the slightest clue about how or why you thought about something... But yes, thats an aspect of your mind.. Its a huge train of thoughts...

If you train your mind in the positive sense to think about something out of the blue or innovative... You may probably be the next Da Vinci.... If you fall victim to the train of thoughts.. You can be the worst disaster...

The mind is the most powerful tool in this world.. Creation or Destruction happens only if the mind wills... Thats why extra importance has been given to Chitta Shuddhi or "the purification of mind"...

Just stop worrying about every thing and think... You'd know, that most of the worries are baseless... :)
